A $4 million indoor shooting range opens at Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park

ONTONAGON, MI – A new state-of-the-art shooting range is opening in the Upper Peninsula.

The Lake Superior Sportsman's Club celebrates the grand opening of the Porcupine Mountain Shooting Complex.

The new facility at Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park will feature six 75-foot-long lanes for practicing pistol shooting.

The grand opening event will be held on Saturday, December 14, from noon to 5 p.m. and will include raffles, demonstrations, retail purchases, and membership sales and renewals.

The club's “vision project” has been in existence for 13 years and was inspired by the club's late president, Walt Toepfer, who passed away last year.

The $4 million project was funded in part by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and a federal grant through the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act, also known as the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act.

Sportsman Club members also raised $50,000 for the massive new building.

The indoor shooting range features automatic target carriers, touchscreen monitors and several preset routines. The shooting range currently allows for pistol practice and will also include rifle shooting practice in the future.

Additionally, the facility has a conference room used for first aid, shooting safety and pistol licensing courses.

The Sportsman's Club's current property, which includes outdoor shooting and archery ranges, will be upgraded in the second phase of the club's plan, said club President Charles Mott.

Members have already started using the new facility on Thursday evenings. The range will be open to the public in the new year.

At the opening, the club signs a membership contract. Memberships purchased now run until May 2026, so the first four months are free.

The shooting range is located at 31433 West State Hwy M-64, Ontonagon, in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and six miles from the entrance to the winter sports complex.
