In the US state of New Mexico, police have arrested a 16-year-old who is said to have killed his parents and two brothers. The police confiscated a pistol in the house, as they announced on Sunday.
The Valencia County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call early Saturday morning from a young man who said he had killed his family, police said Sunday. When officers reached the crime scene in the town of Belen, “the 16-year-old left the house with his hands raised and heavily drunk.”
Officers then discovered four bodies with gunshot wounds in the house: a 42-year-old man, a 35-year-old woman and two 16- and 14-year-old boys. A Belen official said the victims were the suspect's parents and two brothers. According to police, the 16-year-old is charged with four counts of murder.
Gun violence is common
Gun violence is an everyday problem in the United States, where there are more guns than people. There have been at least 484 gun attacks with four or more victims in the U.S. so far this year, according to the activist group Gun Violence Archive.
Attempts to tighten lax gun laws regularly fail due to resistance from conservative Republicans and the powerful gun lobby.
