Controversial app is automatically installed on millions of cell phones

The mobile phone company Telefónica (O2) has announced a cooperation with Epic Games, the game publisher behind Fortnite and Co. Epic Games made headlines a while ago when it removed the popular game Fortnite from the Apple Appstore and Google Play Store. From now on, the Epic Store offers an alternative to Google's Play Store on Android. This store should now be installed on O2 smartphones without asking.

O2 cooperates with Epic Games

The newly announced cooperation between the two companies involves pre-installing the Epic Store on all compatible Android smartphones sold by O2. After purchasing the smartphone, customers will also find the Epic Store on their smartphone in addition to the Google Play Store and can install apps such as Fortnite there.

This applies to all new Telefónica (O2) smartphones sold in Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico and Spanish-speaking Latin America. Existing devices are spared. In the future, the app will only be available on newly sold smartphones.

Get rid of Epic Store

The pre-installed Epic Store will definitely be practical for some users. Apps like Fortnite can be installed with just a few clicks. But not everyone wants the App Store on their new device. The Epic company is controversial even among gamers. With exclusive deals and numerous controversial statements from the CEO, the company hasn't exactly made itself popular in recent years. Epic is also 48 percent owned by the Chinese company Tencent. However, it denies sharing user data with China.

If you don't want to have the app pre-installed by O2 on your smartphone, you can fortunately uninstall it. To do this, you have to press and hold on the app and then select “uninstall”. However, if you reset the smartphone to factory settings, the app appears again.

On the PC, the Epic Store is best known for its free games. Every week you can get an otherwise paid game here for free. This week there are two particularly high-quality titles.
