A shooting and associated fiery car crash in Towson, a suburb north of Baltimore, left one person dead and nine others injured Tuesday evening, according to police.
Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough reported that shots were heard in a neighborhood near the scene of the accident, which occurred outside a closed funeral home.
The car involved in the accident lay on its side in flames. Police responded to reports of gunshots throughout the area and found damage to the funeral home's exterior.
Authorities have not yet released the names or health status of the victims, but it is not clear whether all nine injured people were shot.
Police believe it was a targeted and isolated shooting, with McCullough stating, “It appears that the individuals in this case knew each other in some way and that this incident was intentional and targeted.”
Investigators continue to gather details about the shooting, described as a “rolling gun situation,” that led to the crash site.
The identities of the victims have not been released and police are still investigating the circumstances of the incident.
“We are working hard to gather all the facts and will provide more details as we have them,” McCullough added.
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski expressed shock at the incident, noting, “This is a shocking incident, especially for those of us in Baltimore County.”
Such incidents are unheard of here and are therefore a real shock to the conscience.” Olszewski also assured the public that law enforcement would be provided with all the resources necessary to solve the case.
The investigation is ongoing and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
