For the third year in a row, Scottie Scheffler will be heading into the Tour Championship on the inside track to win the FedEx Cup. The world No. 1 started the week 10 under par and two shots ahead and is now hoping for a first win after failing to win his first two attempts.
With a newly restored East Lake Golf Club and a hungry chasing group hot on his heels, Scheffler won't win the race of the season easily. Xander Schauffele enters the Tour Championship as his closest pursuer at 8-under par and with a wealth of experience on the course. Whether that translates to the latest version of East Lake remains to be seen, but the two-time major champion will surely play a role in some capacity.
St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama and BMW Championship winner Keegan Bradley complete the list of players four places off the top, while Ludvig Åberg is trying to win the FedEx Cup from five places back on his first trip to East Lake. Heavyweights such as Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark begin the tournament on the fringes of the competition, half a dozen places behind.
Meanwhile, former FedEx Cup winners Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel have some catching up to do if they want to win a second trophy. Veterans like Adam Scott, Tommy Fleetwood and Tony Finau are still in the race, but it will take a huge effort to catch the world No. 1.
