Carlos Torres in custody after police chase and shootout that ends in crash in Bear, Delaware

BEAR, Delaware (WPVI) – A man is in custody following a chase and shooting in New Castle County Saturday night.

The incident occurred shortly before 11:45 p.m. when New Castle County police were called to a robbery in progress at the Augustine Place apartment complex in Bear, Delaware.

According to police, a suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, which then collided with a car and several police SUVs.

According to authorities, the suspect struck a New Castle County police officer as he fled, after which police opened fire on the suspect.

Despite the gunshots, the suspect allegedly fled the scene in his vehicle. The car was later found abandoned a short distance away and the suspect is believed to have fled on foot.

Investigators later identified the suspect as 36-year-old Carlos Torres of Wilmington.

A search warrant was issued for Torres on Sunday and police said they searched several known addresses where he may have been staying.

According to police, Torres was subsequently located and taken into custody.

Authorities say he was not injured in the shooting, but was injured at some point during the initial altercation that first called police to the home.

Torres has since been charged with second-degree assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and other related offenses.

According to investigators, the officers involved in the incident were not seriously injured.

The officers who shot Torres – a 12-year and 3-year veteran – were placed on leave per department policy.
