What else is needed for the exchange?
- A valid ID card or passport,
- a biometric passport photo,
- the old driving license,
- and around 25 euros for processing (higher fees may apply).
A notice: Anyone who has changed their place of residence since receiving the driver's license to be exchanged still needs a copy of the index card from the driving license authority that originally issued the document.
Once you have the new EU driving license, it remains valid for 15 years. After this period has expired, you have to exchange the ID card again.
Anyone who misses or forgets the deadline and continues to drive with their old car or motorcycle license risks a fine of ten euros, the ADAC informs. Motorcyclists and car drivers are not committing a crime. However, if truck and bus drivers are checked with old driving licenses, it is a criminal offense. There are significantly harsher penalties for this.
