Taking action yourself is the best medicine – an example shows how it works
The excess weight came gradually. With his studies and his everyday working life, Holger Liedtke becomes more and more comfortable.
The former competitive athlete's scales recently showed 165 kilograms and a height of 1.86 meters.
When his doctor suggested a gastric band, something clicked for the 63-year-old: he had to take action to improve his health – and enrolled in a special AOK PLUS program.
AOK PLUS offers therapy-accompanying programs
The health insurance company currently offers three therapy-accompanying programs: “Healthy Back”, “Nutritional Advice” and “Live Easier and More Actively”. Insured people have been able to use these so-called secondary prevention measures in the event of the first complaints or restrictions since 2010.
The programs are intended to help address chronic complaints, minimize individual risks and prevent illnesses from becoming chronic. At the same time, they should increase the quality of life of the participants.
Persevere despite setbacks
For Holger Liedtke, “living more easily and actively” worked. In the last two years, the Saxon has lost over 60 kilograms and gotten his health problems under control.
He benefited from the program's unique combination of exercise, nutrition and relaxation. At the same time, the professional guidance in the group and the know-how of the therapists are motivating.
Holger Liedtke advises: “Failure now and then can happen and is okay. But then you just have to stick with it and keep going!”
Secondary prevention: demand is increasing
In recent years, the number of participants in secondary prevention offers has increased.
In 2023, 7,600 insured people used the AOK PLUS program. For comparison: in 2018 there were 5,868.
In total, the health insurance fund spent over 2.5 million euros on therapy-related offers last year
