BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Baton Rouge police have arrested a 22-year-old man for his involvement in a fatal shooting the day before Thanksgiving. The grandmother of the eight-year-old who was killed says she knows her grandson's suspected murderer.
“He is the father of my niece’s child. He was at our house. He calls me aunt,” Erica Rayford said
So Rayford said she knew Kendrick Profit. She now knows him as the person who police say shot and killed three of her grandchildren last month. 8-year-old Diellon Daniels died.
“It hurts to know that you know the person you saw. They were near you. You’re connected to your family,” Rayford explained. “I just wish you had thought about it and not just planned something and then done it, because my baby would probably be here today.”
According to a police report, Profit and three other men were seen on surveillance video getting out of the car and witnesses said they were involved in the fatal shooting. It goes on to say that Profit had a weapon and got rid of a live cartridge and a cartridge case. Police say the shooting was a targeted attack, with more than 60 bullet casings found at the scene.
Diellon's 7-year-old brother, Denim, was hit by five bullets, but one of them remained lodged in his leg.
“Just hearing him say that he's running for his life and there's still bullets flying at you and taking bullets while you're trying to escape. I can’t imagine that,” Rayford said. “I can’t even imagine what Diellon went through. It’s just hard.”
Rayford said the arrest was bittersweet and the violence against her family won't stop her from praying for and forgiving Profit.
I will pray for him and pray with him. Pray that he finds peace and through it God,” Rayford said. “My door is always open and I've always been about helping others, and the violence that took Dill Pickle's life won't change that. It will not harden my heart or make me feel differently about those who shot my grandchildren and killed Diellon.”
Diellon's funeral will be held on Saturday, December 14th at the Shekinah Glory Christian Center. The address is 10770 Greenwell Springs Road.
Police said his murder remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information regarding this shooting investigation is asked to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
