EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso County will host its second annual Gun Buyback event in September.
The event will take place on September 21st from 8 a.m. to noon at the El Paso County Coliseum.
El Paso County, in cooperation with the District Attorney's Office and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, is offering cash to the public in the form of prepaid Mastercard gift cards in exchange for unwanted firearms.
Non-functional firearms and ammunition will also be accepted.
However, ammunition will not be refunded and ghost weapons will not be accepted during this event.
Anyone can take part by voluntarily exchanging up to ten firearms that they no longer need for prepaid gift cards – without ID and without questions being asked.
The first event in the county took place last year. As a result, nearly 500 guns were voluntarily collected and participants were given gift certificates totaling $60,000.
“The community participation exceeded all of our expectations. Because these weapons were secured, they can never be stolen or used in a crime. Every gun that comes in is a win for the safety of our community,” said Carlos Leon, El Paso County Precinct 1 Commissioner.
“Our gun buyback programs help gun owners and their families dispose of unwanted and unsecured guns. This helps reduce the number of gun incidents in schools, reduce the risk of accidental shootings and prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands – including children, people with mental health issues, people with dementia, perpetrators of domestic violence and criminals,” Leon said.
All weapons surrendered will be destroyed in accordance with county and federal guidelines.
Buyback amount and accepted firearms:
- $50 – Non-functioning firearms
- $100 – Rifles and Shotguns
- $150 – Handguns
- $200 – Assault Rifles
