Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) responded to news that a woman had died in a traffic accident with police responding to a bomb threat at the lawmaker's home in Georgia.
“I’m heartbroken right now. “I have just been informed that an innocent woman died today in a car accident involving a member of the Rome Police Bomb Squad who responded to the threat at my home,” Greene wrote on the social platform X earlier this week .
“My prayers go out to Tammie Pickelsimer, her family, the injured officer and the entire Rome Police Department,” she added.
Greene confirmed Monday that she was safe after it was reported that an email had been sent to law enforcement about a bomb threat against the Republican lawmaker. The Floyd County Bomb Squad was dispatched to her home in Rome, Georgia – about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta. Ultimately, officials ruled out any danger.
The traffic accident, which occurred as the bomb squad arrived at Greene's home, resulted in the death of 66-year-old Pickelsimer.
The bomb threat comes at a time of heightened threat activity targeting elected and public officials on both sides of the ballot. Several members of President-elect Trump's new Cabinet have also been threatened.
“These violent political threats have dire consequences,” Greene said. “It is an undue burden on our law enforcement agencies that must be taken seriously. The officer responded to protect my life. And now a woman has lost her life because of this heinous act.”
“The perpetrator of this crime committed murder in our small community of Rome, Georgia,” she continued in her post. “Police should not have to respond to these threats and there should be no deaths at their hands.”
Police have traced the IP address of the threatening email to Russia.
Greene said she was very grateful that police took action to protect her city of Rome, but shared her frustration over the incident.
“I feel bad, but I’m also angry,” she said. “This should never have happened and I pray it never happens again.”
