49ers starter at risk of being traded due to overcrowded secondary

The San Francisco 49ers must reduce their roster to 53 players by the deadline on Tuesday afternoon.

There will certainly be a lot of activity in San Francisco over the next 24 hours, and that could lead to some transfers and a lot of release. One player who could move is cornerback Ambry Thomas, according to Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors.

“49ers CB Ambry Thomas or Samuel Womack or Darrell Luter or Rock Ya-Sin, (New York Giants) CB Tre Hawkins or Darnay Holmes or Tre Herndon, (Philadelphia Eagles) CB Josh Jobe or Zech McPhearson or Eli Ricks, (and) (Arizona Cardinals) CB Starling Thomas,” Ulrich said. “At this point, it looks like the 49ers' three cornerbacks are Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir and second-round rookie Renardo Green.

“Veteran Isaac Yiadom is locked in as the top backup, leaving one or two spots for Thomas, Womack, Luter and Ya-Sin. Whoever lands on the wrong side of the bubble could draw interest from other teams. San Francisco will also need additional depth at safety, while Talanoa Hufanga is recovering from his torn ACL last year, which is eating into the available cornerback spots.”

Thomas was a starter for the 49ers for a time last season. He appeared in 15 games for San Francisco in 2023, starting six games. It's unclear exactly what the 49ers will do, but it's clear that changes are coming.
