As part of Netflix's big deal with Shonda Rhimes, The Residence will be coming to the streaming service next. Rhimes has already produced “Bridgerton”, the spin-off series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” and “Inventing Anna” for Netflix, all of which were successes. Her latest prank is neither a costume drama nor a con artist thriller, but sounds like a treat for fans of “Knives Out” and the Hercule Poirot stories.
“The residence“ is a humorous murder mystery series with a cranky investigator at the center. “The Residence” will be released on March 20, 2025 on Netflix, Season 1 consists of eight one-hour episodes – although it remains to be seen whether there will even be a season 2; so far the project is being treated as a miniseries. The series is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers is loosely inspired by the bestselling book The Residence: Inside The Private World Of The White House by Kate Andersen Brower. “The Residence” series creator and showrunner Paul William Davies, who previously worked as a writer on the Shonda Rhimes production “Scandal,” pulled some details from the book but knitted it into a completely new story.

“The Residence”: Murder in the White House
When a murder occurs in the White House during a state banquet with over 150 guests, Washington detective Cordelia Cupp is assigned to the case. Cupp is eccentric but brilliant, uses unconventional methods to work – and is passionate about ornithology in her free time. All of this seems very suspicious to Edwin Park, who is assigned to her by the FBI. But he soon learns to appreciate his new colleague and that's a good thing, because the two of them really don't have an easy task ahead of them.
Because it's not just the banquet participants who want to be questioned, all employees of the presidential residence also need to be examined and the 132 rooms of the White House searched, where new surprises are always waiting for the duo – and dying Very few of them have anything to do with the mysterious murder case.

By the way, the series was actually supposed to star “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” fan favorite Andre Braugher, who died in December 2023 at the age of 61. Filming for “The Residence” had already started in 2023 and Braugher had shot some scenes. But then production had to pause due to the big Hollywood double strike and during this time Braugher succumbed to cancer. Unfortunately, his crazy scenes weren't enough to make his “The Residence” role his final appearance – the part was taken over by Giancarlo Esposito, of all the scenes that have already been filmed and re-shot again.
