“Superman & Lois” has played its final chord and with it the DC epic on the US network The CW. What happened in the finale and what was planned for further seasons?
“Superman & Lois” ended a superhero chapter on the US channel The CW, which was the home of “Smallville”, but also the Arrowverse around “Arrow”, “The Flash” and several others. The Superman series was only indirectly part of it because it changed after the events of “Crisis of Infinite Earth” and from then on took place in its own world, but it can still be counted as the last remnant of this era. After four seasons, the end has now been reached and an era is coming to an end.
This is how “Superman & Lois” ended after four seasons
Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) defeated Doomsday, who was sent into the sun. Lex Luthor (Michael Cudlitz) has to go to prison and becomes Bruno Mannheim's cellmate. It then flashed 30 years into the future, where viewers witnessed the deaths of Lois and Clark. David Giuantoli (“Grimm”) played an adult version of Jonathan. By the way, he is Elizabeth Tulloch's husband and also directed the fourth season.
Lois died as a simple person first, surrounded by her family, because the cancer returned in an aggressive version. After an emotional farewell, viewers learn how Clark/Superman spends the rest of his life. Super dog Krypto is also there.
At the end of his life, Clark said, “Suddenly I understood what life was all about: joy.” Hope. Forgiveness. Friendship. Love”. This was also accompanied by Lois in her famous red dress, which can also be seen in the episode “The Dress” from the third season.
There is also some information about the fate of the remaining characters. Lana and John Henry got married. Kyle and Chrissy have had a daughter and a second offspring is hinted at. Sarah has decided to leave Smallville and Natalia aka Starlight continues her fight alongside Jonathan and Jordan. Now with matching hero outfits.
Superman & Lois: What would have happened if there was a sequel?
Opposite TVLine Co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher revealed that they had planned up to seven seasons. Although they managed to suggest or accommodate most of it somehow, there were also some ideas left open.
Helbing: “If we had done a few more seasons, we would have liked to explore Brainiac.” He was played by Nikolai Witschl. “We had done some other cool, traditional Brainiac stuff with him.”
While Doomsday is of course a deadly villain, there were wishes to take on Darkseid at some point. Helbing said: “There was also a path that led to Darkseid, which we discussed.” However, DC would probably have had to approve it beforehand: “I don't know if DC would have given us permission for Darkseid, but we had each other ..” really tried hard to do that when pitching. That would have been very entertaining.”
Finally, they wanted to bring back Adam Rayner as Superman's brother Tal-Rah, who was last seen in the Inverse World in the second season. However, due to time and money constraints, this didn't work out as planned.
At DC, James Gunn is now in charge, who started the new DCU together with Peter Safran, which will start with “Creature Commando”.
