Neighboring country recorded e-car boom: from 1 to 11.5 percent in less than 4 years

(EFAHRER.com)More and more Danes are choosing electric cars.

Northern Europeans are electric car fans. The Scandinavian countries, especially Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, are at the top in the ranking of new electric car registrations. But Denmark is also catching up quickly. The rates of increase are impressive.

Around six million people currently live in Denmark. That is fewer than in Hesse and not even half as many as in Bavaria. But in other rankings the Danes regularly place at the top. A good example is the “World Happiness Report”, which has been regularly ranking 143 countries for the happiest people for years. Denmark has a firm place on the podium here and was able to secure second place again behind Finland in 2024.

As the latest statistics from the Danish authorities show, electric cars are part of the Danes' happiness. In the past four years, the electric car quota in Germany's northern neighbors has increased from less than one percentage point to 11.5 percent. In absolute numbers, this means that more than 325,000 electric cars are now registered in Denmark. 14,000 were added in November alone.

More and more electric cars in Denmark

Germany had to settle for 24th place in the latest happiness ranking. This corresponds to the common cliché, according to which people in this country have a hard time with unadulterated joy. Progress with electric cars in Germany is also rather slow. Of course, the absolute numbers here are much higher – around 1.6 million electric vehicles are registered here – but in percentage terms it looks completely different. While the Danes now have 11.5 percent of electric cars in their vehicle fleet, in Germany it is only 2.1 percent.

Why are the Danes in the fast lane?

The reasons for this development are certainly diverse. The Danes, for example, have higher purchasing power than the Germans, which could be one of the reasons. But in the European ranking, both are quite close together. What is probably more important is that there was also state funding for electric cars in Denmark in 2024, although at a maximum of 4,500 euros it was lower than in the previous year. In Germany? The so-called environmental bonus was completely canceled at the end of 2023.
