Kent man jailed for beating girlfriend to death

A Kent man has been jailed for life after murdering his girlfriend by beating her to death in an argument.

Huseyin Kalyoncu, 34, from Edenbridge, was arrested on May 5 after he knocked Sonia Parker unconscious at her home in Styles Close.

During a trial, the court heard how Ms Parker, 51, died from a combination of catastrophic injuries to her head and torso sustained from repeated blows.

Kalyoncu was sentenced to life imprisonment at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday. He must serve at least 19 years before being considered for parole.

After the attack, paramedics attempted to revive Ms Parker but she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Kalyoncu was arrested and later charged with murder, which he denied. He later confessed to manslaughter, but was found guilty of murder at trial.

According to police, Ms Parker suffered 69 injuries to her body, internal bruising, damage to her liver and spleen, five broken spinal bones and 19 fractures to her ribs and chest.

The pathologist determined that some of the injuries had occurred weeks before her death.

Det Supt Kathleen Way said after the verdict on Wednesday: “Kalyoncu killed the woman he claimed to have loved.”

“By denying his involvement in Ms. Parker’s murder, Kalyoncu subsequently forced the victim’s family and friends to relive her loss over and over again during the trial.

“His inability to control his temper and despicable behavior means he must now serve at least 19 years in prison before he will even be considered for parole.”

“I hope his long prison sentence provides some comfort to Sonia’s family and friends.”
