Instead of joining the national team, Kylian Mbappé is traveling to Stockholm in October. The short vacation has consequences because the Real Madrid star is being investigated on suspicion of rape. Now the case is closed due to lack of evidence.
The investigation against French soccer star Kylian Mbappé in Sweden was set up due to a lack of evidence. The responsible public prosecutor's office wrote in a statement that it involved an alleged rape and two alleged cases of sexual harassment in a hotel in central Stockholm in October.
“In my opinion, the evidence is insufficient to proceed and the investigation has been closed,” said the responsible public prosecutor Marina Chirakova. Mbappé was not mentioned by name in the statement. The plaintiff's name was also not officially mentioned.
Swedish media reported unanimously that these were allegations against the 25-year-old Real Madrid striker. Mbappé reacted indignantly to the first allegations and had a defamation lawsuit filed through his lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard. The 2018 world champion wrote about “fake news” on social media.
Mbappé reacted “surprised”
The investigation revolved around events in October. Mbappé did not travel to the national team at the time, but instead took a short vacation in Sweden as agreed with his club Real Madrid. Swedish media subsequently reported that Mbappé was being investigated on suspicion of rape. According to Swedish media, the incident is said to have occurred at the Bank Hotel in central Stockholm. The public prosecutor's office confirmed at the time that a report of rape had been received by the police. But they did not say who the suspicion was directed against.
Mbappé recently commented on the reports in an interview on French television. In the television program “Clique” on “Canal+”, the captain of the French national team said that he had never felt affected by the allegations. “I was surprised. By the way, I'm still surprised. These are things that happen and you don’t see them coming,” said Mbappé.
