Reno's former instructor and role model, Jack Varnell, dies when a car bomb explodes. Reno then promises Jack's wife that he will find the murderer. Since Jack recently investigated a drug case in Mexico, Reno and Bobby also go to Mexico to look for clues about a possible murder. However, they find Jack there, alive. He staged his death himself so that he could go into hiding.
