New Delhi:

A junior doctor and a paramedical officer were allegedly attacked by a patient's nurse, just days after junior doctors returned to work following an 11-day nationwide strike over the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata.

The incident occurred late Saturday evening at Doctor Hedgewar Hospital in Karkardooma while the doctor was providing intensive care.

The attacked doctor told PTI, “Late on Saturday night, around 1:00 am, a patient was brought to the hospital with a forehead injury. I took him to the dressing room to stitch the wound. After completing the first stitch and working on the second one, the patient suddenly pushed me and started abusing me.”

“His son, who was outside the room, came in, hit me and both of them started abusing me further.” According to the doctor, who wishes to remain anonymous, the patient was drunk.

Hundreds of junior doctors in Delhi had resumed work on August 23 following an appeal by the Supreme Court and an assurance from the government that it would address their concerns.

The strike, which began on August 12, caused significant disruption to non-emergency services, including outpatient and diagnostic care, at major central and Delhi government hospitals.
