Is Marvel Rivals wiping up the floor with Overwatch? It really is that good!

In the test it is noticeable that support units like Adam Warlock play a crucial role. Because while the heavy boys and girls on the front line beat their noses bloody, healers in the background worry about their physical well-being. If teams were on the battlefield without a medical department, it (almost) always resulted in a clear defeat.

Overall, the events are rather chaotic, which means that frontline fighters like Hulk, Thor and Captain America in particular quickly go under. Due to the high pace of play and the enormous density of effects, it is sometimes difficult to keep track of things. Despite acoustic cues, the feedback from close-range strikes is far less clear than from distance attacks.

Or, to put it another way: the tanks didn't really convince us. Although they nominally provide more hit points, they only make a real difference for very experienced players. This is probably one of the reasons why damage dealers populate the online battle areas over long stretches. The weapon and hit feedback turns out to be decent apart from the melee attack.

Very nice: All actions feel different and thus underline the characters. The best example here is certainly Squirrel Girl, who shoots exploding nuts with her slingshot. Hawkeye, on the other hand, shoots arrows and does more or less damage depending on how long we hold down the action button. Not to mention Land Shark Jeff, who spits water fountains at his opponents and, as the ultimate, eats them up shorthand, only to puke them out again somewhere else.

Colorful ensemble with big names

As a hero shooter, Marvel Rivals is fine. The characters' abilities mesh well, the card design is nice and the gameplay is solid. It's just another representative of the genre that is clearly sailing in the wake of Overwatch. However, the hero shooter was rarely able to inspire real enthusiasm based on its gameplay alone. To put it bluntly: Without the license, Marvel Rivals would only be half as interesting.

However, the big names allow for exciting mind games and, especially while the game is running, constantly provide a headache: How could Mantis simply knock the Hulk away? Now let's dismantle the good Captain America with the Punisher and then we'll take on Spider-Man! The game has enormous recognition value and derives much of its initial motivation from this.

NetEase implements the characters with great attention to detail and not only imposes the roles already mentioned on them, but also adapts the gameplay individually to the characters. Every superhero plays differently and requires a fundamentally different approach. Conveniently, Marvel Rivals offers detailed tutorials and help screens. At first, the sheer volume of characters and abilities can be a bit overwhelming.

Down-to-earth brawlers like the Punisher or Hawkeye are very reminiscent of classic arena shooters in their orientation. The Punisher, for example, grabs a machine gun from a distance, throws a smoke grenade or even sets up a cannon. His super skill is the so-called final judgment – a double Gatling gun with which we sift through our opponents. Then there are the floating and flying comic stars like Iron Man, Star-Lord and Storm. They give the event a three-dimensional touch.
