“Thailand – Traveling in the Kingdom of Smiles” on TV: That’s what the documentary is about
Thailand is a diverse travel destination and also has a lot to offer beyond the hotspots: between the wild north and the paradisiacal south, there are magnificent temples and spectacular nature. A journey across mainland Thailand reveals a rich culture, eventful history and colorful traditions. This shows the multi-faceted “Land of Smiles” from a completely new side. First stop is Sop Ruak in the Golden Triangle. Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet there on the banks of the Mekong. The border area was once the center of global opium production. On the Thai side, tea plantations dominate the landscape today. In Sop, Ruak has an interactive museum, the “Hall of Opium,” that explains the long history of the drug and the effects of opium addiction. Further south in the Golden Triangle, a Buddhist cave temple, “Wat Tham Chiang Dao”, invites you to take a quiet retreat. Impressive temple complexes also await interested visitors in Chiang Rai, the northernmost provincial capital of Thailand. The main attraction is the “Wat Rong Khun”, also known as the “White Temple”. The art project, which is still under construction, combines pop art elements and traditional Buddhist temple architecture. The nearest train station is Chiang Mai with its historic city fortifications. The country's second largest city is considered a stronghold for handicrafts. Whether paper parasols or artistic carvings – everyone will find a suitable souvenir there. We continue to Sukhothai. In the city's history park, 21 temple ruins bear witness to the splendor of bygone times. Sukhothai was once the capital of the first independent Thai kingdom. Kanchanaburi in western Thailand has a dark history: between 1942 and 1943, Allied prisoners of war were forced to build the “Thailand-Burma Railway,” better known as the “Death Railway.” Thousands were killed. In the south of the country is the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park with the spectacular Phraya Nakhon Cave. But there is a steep climb ahead of the visit.
