Dommaraju Gukesh, just 18 years old, is the youngest world chess champion in history. The Indian won the World Cup duel against defending champion Liren Ding 7.5:6.5.

Gukesh assisted in the 14th and final match from a huge blunder by the Chinese on move 55 and after about four hours. At this point it already looked like a draw and the party would have gone to a tiebreaker.

Millions in prize money

The world association FIDE has set the prize money for the title at 2.5 million US dollars, which will be divided according to the games won: world champion Gukesh will receive 1.3 million US dollars, Ding will receive 1.2 million.

Gukesh is the second Indian world champion after Viswanathan Anand (2007 to 2013). Last year Ding was the first Chinese to win the title against the Russian Jan Nepomnjaschtschi.
