Chicago rapper Lil Durk, real name Durk Devontay Banks, just received more bad news as he is behind bars for allegedly hiring people to murder a rival rapper in Los Angeles. The rapper has already been accused of serious charges related to the murder plot against Georgia-based rapper Quando Rondo, but now it appears that even more charges are in Durk's future, related to a completely different incident.
A day before his detention hearing on Thursday (December 12), unsealed court documents allege that Durk was behind the fatal 2022 shooting of Stephon Mack, a known gang member. According to Dailymail.com, Mack, a leader of the Smashville faction of the “Gangster Disciples,” was shot dead in Illinois back in January 2022.
According to ABC News 7, Durk was allegedly involved in Mack's murder as part of another alleged revenge plot in honor of the death of the rapper's brother, Dontay “DThang” Banks. Dontay was killed in 2021 by a faction of “Gangster Disciples” with ties to Smashville, the warrant application said.
According to a federal agent involved in the case, “Lil Durk was and is still offering money to get people to kill those responsible for his brother's murder.” The filing, which was filed in April 2023 but recently unsealed, continues: “More specifically, it offers to pay money for each gangster disciple killed.”
Two men, Anthony Montgomery-Wilson and Preston Powell, have already been charged with conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire in Mack's killing. According to HipHopdx, investigators allegedly found text message conversations in which one of the men asked, “Did Durk give you the money?”
The last thing Durk needs when he's facing murder-for-hire charges is another murder-for-hire trial against him. According to the Chicago Tribune, no official charges have been filed against the rapper yet, but law enforcement says the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
In response to the case against Durk, his lawyers told the court during the recent hearing: “Mr. Banks has been deeply committed to giving back to the Chicago community he loves through his Neighborhood Heroes Foundation and has held more than a dozen charitable events in recent years.” They continued, “He looks forward to going to court against to press forward with these false accusations.”
Lil Durk was denied bail and will remain in jail until his trial.
