The disappearance of a young couple in Central America, the shocking research results of a journalist in Saudi Arabia and a “blind date around the Christmas tree” – these are our media library tips this week.
1978. The British couple Chris Farmer and Peta Frampton are on a world tour. Both are in their mid-20s, he is a newly qualified doctor and she has just completed her law studies. In Central America the two go on a sailing trip lasting several weeks with an American skipper and his two sons.
They have no idea when they are in danger. Peta regularly writes long letters to her family in Manchester, and Chris sends his sister cassettes he has discussed. Until contact breaks off. The last letter was from Livingston Guatemala.
The police are puzzled. Have they been kidnapped? Have they gotten lost? Everything seems possible. Then their bodies are found. The murder case remained unsolved for 40 years. The three-part story describes how we managed to arrest the perpetrator Real crime documentary “Murder in Hippie Paradise”. Can be seen in the ZDF media library.
The Dark Businesses – Documentary of the Polished Image
Mohammed Bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, announced Project 2030. With massive construction projects, he polished his country's image as modern and progressive.
“For the last eight years, Mohammed Bin Salman has sold the world a new Saudi Arabia. “His vision was enthusiastically received by politicians, companies and stars,” says the WDR documentary “Undercover in Saudi Arabia,” for which a journalist secretly went on a research trip – and thus put herself in great danger.
For her protection, she remains anonymous and her reports will be repeated. She interviews migrant workers who live like slaves, reports on young women who have to go to prison for many years because they stand up for women's rights; of mistreatment of female domestic workers, forced evictions and displacement.
“The human rights situation in Saudi Arabia is worse than ever,” is one of the findings. Saudi Arabia will host the World Cup in 2034, it has just been decided. The film also says: “The idea that a top-class tournament like the World Cup could go to a country where grievances are structural is outrageous.”
Die The documentary “Undercover in Saudi Arabia” can now be found in the ARD media library, as is the documentary “Is Saudi Arabia taking away football from us?”, which is also worth watching.
