Berlin (dpa) – Suspected right-wing radicals have members of the SPD attacked. A party member was thrown to the ground in the Lichterfelde district and kicked in the stomach and face, the SPD Steglitz-Zehlendorf said on the Instagram platform. Upon request, the police announced that the attackers were people who were on their way to a right-wing demonstration in the Friedrichshain and Friedrichshain districts Lichtenberg would have found. They arrived from another federal state. The “Tagesspiegel” previously reported on the attack.
The incident on Kranoldplatz near Lichterfelde-Ost train station at midday initially resulted in verbal disputes with people who were running an SPD stand, a police spokesman said in the evening. Afterwards, physical injuries occurred against the stand operators. Five people were arrested and taken to a prisoner collection point, it was said in the evening.
The SPD wrote on Instagram that the attackers were right-wing extremists. Among those attacked was the chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district council, Carolyn Macmillan. She was quoted in the post as saying she was still in shock. The district chairman Ruppert Stüwe told the article: “The election campaign in Steglitz-Zehlendorf begins with attacks by Nazis against democracy.” Both thanked the police, who reacted quickly.
