“The culture of the music world sucks”

Reznor and Ross prefer to focus on producing soundtracks.

Sometimes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross make songs for their project Nine Inch Nails, sometimes they compose film music. As it emerged in an interview, she really blossomed when creating soundtracks. This is partly because she doesn't like the music world.

That's why Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross prefer to create works for films

Speaking to IndieWire on December 11, the Nine Inch Nails founder said: “What we [beim Film] is looking for a collaborative experience with interesting people. We didn’t necessarily get that in the music world, of our own accord.”

The 59-year-old further explained that outside of their music project Nine Inch Nails, he and Ross enjoy “working in the service of something where we don't have control over the whole thing.” Where we work closely with a director or a small one Team work together to try to realize a collective vision and solve this puzzle without the burden of 'How will it be marketed?' and all these things.”

They even won an Academy Award

This is how the two artists started creating works for films. Like the soundtrack to “The Social Network” by David Fincher. The score even earned Reznor and Ross an Oscar in 2011, as well as a Golden Globe Award and the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award. From then on, more orders were added. They created music for films such as “Gone Girl” (2014), “The Killer” (2023), “Soul” (animated film from 2020) and “Challengers – Rivals” (2024).

The music world is “devastating”

The American spoke about the “disappointment of the music world”. To this he said: “Yes. The culture within the music world sucks. “That's a different topic, but what technology has done to disrupt the music business, not just in terms of how people listen to music, but also in terms of the value they place on it, is devastating.” Reznor realized that he wouldn't say that as an “old man” – he was more interested in expressing his feelings about the music world, which used to be a different one. It was very important there “where music was the main thing”. And: “Music feels [heute] essentially as something that happens in the background or while you are doing something else. It's a long, bitter story.”
