Dennis Schröder has only been with the Brooklyn Nets since February 2024, when the German point guard came from Toronto – for him personally it was the fourth trade of his NBA career. Now, less than a year later, trade number five follows, this time going to the West Coast to the Golden State Warriors.
First had died ESPN reported about the trade, the Warriors have since confirmed it. In addition to Schröder, the Nets are also sending a future second-round pick to San Francisco, in return guard Reece Beekman, the currently injured De'Anthony Melton – he will miss the entire rest of the season due to a cruciate ligament injury – and three future second-round picks are going to Brooklyn.
This is Schröder's eighth NBA stop after Atlanta, Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston, Houston, Toronto and Brooklyn.
Schröder plays himself into the spotlight
National team captain and world champion Schröder played his way into the focus of other teams with strong performances in the first 23 games of the season. For the Nets, who got off to a surprisingly good start, the 31-year-old averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists, with good shooting rates of 45.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from the three-point line.
Thanks to Schröder, Brooklyn is currently in the race for the play-ins in the Eastern Conference with ten wins and 15 defeats, although the focus is actually on rebuilding the team. Therefore, Schröder, whose contract expires in the summer of 2025, was a trade candidate. In the current season, the Braunschweig native earned just over $13 million.
Schröder: Title fight with the Warriors?
With the Warriors, he could now close several construction sites and even play for the title alongside superstar Stephen Curry and defensive ace Draymond Green – who have won the championship four times with Golden State since 2015. The Dubs are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference with 14 wins and ten defeats and are on course for the playoffs, but recently lost seven of the last nine games.
Ideally, Schröder should relieve Curry in the backcourt on offense and help with his qualities as a defender. Above all, Golden State was looking for another scorer after Klay Thompson left the club for the Dallas Mavericks in the summer – they have now found him.
