Saarbrücken – While many people enjoy the holidays with family, gifts and good food, there are many who have to spend Christmas alone. So that no one stays lonely on Christmas Eve, the Protestant and Catholic churches in Saarbrücken are holding their Christmas Eve campaign for the 55th time. On December 24th, poor, homeless and lonely people are invited to the E-Werk in Saarbrücken-Burbach. From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., guests can enjoy a warm meal in a festive atmosphere, experience a varied entertainment program and chat in good company.
The atmospheric supporting program includes performances by the Saarbrücken Trombone Choir and two music duos. Superintendent Christian Weyer and Bishop Stephan Ackermann read out Christmas texts and the Gospel. There is a special care program for children and young people between the ages of four and 14 with crafts, board games and a chill-out area.
The Christmas menu remains a surprise, but pastoral officer Lutwin Gilla reveals: “The food is designed to take cultural diversity into account.” In addition to non-perishable food for the guests, there are special gift bags for children and food for dogs and cats. Due to the rising costs – 69,000 euros compared to 60,000 euros last year – donations are more important than ever. Those responsible would like to thank the city of Saarbrücken, which is providing the power plant free of charge, as well as the around 150 volunteers who are actively helping.
Admission is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., places are limited to 800 adults plus children. This year, too, a bus shuttle will ensure that guests get home despite the lack of public transport. The organizers invite everyone to enjoy the festive atmosphere together and experience Christmas as a sign of community and solidarity.
