Windows 11 24H2: KB5048667 update causes installation and performance problems

Patchday issues

The most recent patch day brought the KB5048667 patch for Windows 11 24H2. According to user reports, there are problems with installation and performance.

Last Tuesday, the December Patch Day for the Microsoft operating systems Windows 10 and 11 took place. The current software received the KB5048667 patch in the 24H2 version, which primarily focused on security improvements and bug fixes. As Windows Latest reports, the update seems to cause far more problems than it solves.

Both the online portal itself and numerous users have discovered that error code 0x800f081f can occur during installation. The process can either remain at zero or one hundred percent before being canceled or restarted. There is currently no known solution to this problem.

If the installation is successful, there may be further problems, according to the report. As a result, CPU performance after the KB5048667 patch for Windows 11 24H2 is significantly worse than normal. The performance losses should only become noticeable after a certain period of use: restarting the computer helps, but after a few hours the CPU performance returns to poorer performance.

The Windows Latest report speculates about a bug with the CPU scheduler that pushes certain games and apps into “low-performance mode” even if they don’t belong there. Here, too, there is no real solution to the problem, but there are at least ways to temporarily fix the bug. This allows users to turn off the “Fast Boot” option in the BIOS, which may be related to the KB5048667 bug. Alternatively, as usual, completely uninstalling the KB5048667 update is helpful at this point.
