The Apple iPad will support macOS apps in the future, which should make the tablets much more versatile. This is particularly true for the first iPad with a foldable display, which should operate without a visible fold when opened and which should offer approximately twice the screen area of the iPad Pro.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple currently plans to launch the first iPad with a foldable display in 2028. While it was previously unclear whether this product would ship with iPadOS or macOS, Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman assumes that a variant of iPadOS will be used in order to be able to use accessories such as the Apple Pencil, and to use one to make touchscreen.

By 2028, however, iPadOS should be able to run macOS apps, which would allow software such as the full version of Capture One, Adobe Premiere or games like Frostpunk 2 to run on the iPad. Since it's already possible to use iPad apps on the Mac, such a move wouldn't be too surprising. As for the hardware, Bloomberg's sources suggest that this foldable iPad will be about the same size as the two iPad Pros placed side by side (around 1,099 euros on Amazon).

Specifically, this means that the folding display should have a screen diagonal of around 18.8 inches. Even in current prototypes, the fold in the middle of this foldable display is said to be barely visible; Apple's engineers are said to have set themselves the goal of completely eliminating this fold. Despite the large screen, this foldable tablet is only intended to be positioned as a high-end iPad. Customers who value productivity above all should continue to value Apple as a Mac, although MacBooks could already be equipped with a touchscreen by then.
