Man accused of shooting Vermont police captain was arrested Sunday morning

A 38-year-old man accused of seriously wounding a Vermont police captain in a shooting was arrested Sunday morning after a multi-day manhunt, police said.

Scott Mason, of St. Johnsbury, was found around 2 a.m. Sunday in a residence at 251 Portlandt St. — next door to where police say Mason shot a police captain Friday afternoon, Vermont State Police said in a statement with.

Police gathered at the Portlandt Street address around midnight on Sunday after obtaining a search warrant.

Mason was taken to the Vermont State Police barracks and is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with serious bodily injury. According to police, he faces unrelated charges of failure to appear on 26 counts of forgery.

The charges against Mason stem from an incident that began around 4:30 p.m. Friday when police went to Mason's apartment at 261 Portlandt St. to report a domestic violence incident. During that response, police say Mason shot and injured Capt. Jason Gray.

Gray, who suffered serious injuries, was in stable condition at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Saturday afternoon, police said.

“We are also thinking about the rest of the police force, as well as our dispatchers and first responders, affected by this traumatic event,” the statement said. “We are committed to supporting all efforts to provide them with the support they need for their recovery.”

As police searched for Mason, the FBI's Albany office offered a reward of up to $25,000 that would lead to his arrest and conviction.
