ROY — Police confirmed that an elderly Roy man died after being struck by a motorist while crossing one of the city's busier intersections on Monday evening.
According to police, Good Samaritans and a Utah Highway Patrol officer rushed to rescue him before emergency crews and paramedics arrived.
Roy County Police Officer Stuart Hackworth said they received a call about a car-pedestrian accident at 5600 S. 1900 West around 5:30 p.m.
Investigators believe the 65-year-old Roy resident had a signal to cross the street and was walking with his walker across the crosswalk from north to south on 5600 South.
At the same time, Hackworth said a driver traveling south on 1900 West attempted to turn left onto 5600 South heading east.
He said the driver “apparently did not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk, continued to turn and struck the pedestrian … causing him to be thrown forward.”
Several westbound motorists who stopped at the light and saw the accident immediately rushed to help the man, Hackworth said. Someone called 911, and he said witnesses told dispatchers that CPR was already underway.
“A patrol officer was on the scene before anyone else, he happened to be in the area,” Hackworth said. “By the time I got there, he was already performing CPR and that continued until the paramedics got there.”
The pedestrian was initially treated in critical condition at the hospital, but Hackworth later reported around 9:30 p.m. that the man had died.
Hackworth said the driver who struck the pedestrian remained on scene and cooperated with police. There are currently no citations or charges against the driver, he said.
Hackworth reminded citizens that not only is there a lot of traffic at this intersection, but there are also cones and construction sites.
He urged drivers to take a second before turning to make sure there is nothing or no one in the way.
