A 38-year-old man who allegedly shot a police officer on Friday in St. Johnsbury, Vt., is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on attempted murder charges, officials said.
On Friday around 4:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of domestic violence on Portland Street, state police said. When they arrived, Scott Mason allegedly shot Jason Gray, a local police captain, seriously wounding him.
Mason was arrested early Sunday at the house next door, police said. Police found Mason at the home after entering it with a search warrant.
Mason was identified as a suspect Friday evening, and the city of St. Johnsbury and the FBI each offered a $25,000 reward for information about his whereabouts, police said. It was not immediately clear whether anyone would receive a reward as a result of Mason's capture.
No further details were available about the alleged domestic violence incident that initially led to police going to the home.
Mason is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with serious bodily injury, as well as other charges unrelated to the shooting, police said.
In a statement Sunday, city officials said Gray was stable at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
“He has suffered serious injuries and our hearts are with him, his family and his friends as he recovers from this attack,” officials said. “We are also thinking about the rest of the police force, as well as our dispatchers and first responders, who have been affected by this traumatic event.”
Gray's condition was not immediately available Monday.
Mason will be arraigned in Vermont Superior Court, a state police spokesman said. It was not known whether he had found a lawyer who could speak on his behalf before the trial.
