Evening update: Lost trust

Good evening,

The Chancellor has lost the trust of Parliament and Germany is heading for new elections. No surprise, but official today. In the vote, 207 MPs voted for Scholz, 394 against him and 116 abstained, as Bundestag President Bärbel Bas announced.

There was an exchange of blows in the Bundestag beforehand: Chancellor Scholz again criticized the FDP in his speech and repeated his proposal for a reduction in VAT on food. You can see the whole speech here:

The traffic light chapter is closed, a new one will open in February with the early elections. But it is not the first time that a chancellor has asked the question of confidence – even if this has rarely happened in the Federal Republic of Germany:

Political scientist Jan Korte explained what is important in an interview before the vote:

You can watch the entire debate again, with the ranking of our correspondents and experts, in today's ZDFheute live broadcast. You can also read everything important again in our live blog.

SPD in Saxony votes for coalition with CDU

After the CDU, the SPD also approved the negotiated coalition agreement in Saxony today. Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer will stand for re-election this week. Whether that works remains to be seen. The CDU and SPD are ten votes short of the state parliament. The Greens have already declared that they do not want to vote for Kretschmer.

Regardless of the time of year, around 57 percent of all young people in Europe say they feel lonely. Level of education apparently also plays a role: people with formal education feel particularly strong feelings of loneliness.
