Just this year, Alex Garland created intense war scenes with “Civil War.” In “Warfare” he follows up on this directly, but above all leaves the field to someone else before his announced break from directing. Here is the trailer:
Not least because of the gripping, gut-wrenching production, “Civil War” has long been one of THE cinema highlights of 2024, and not just for the author of these lines. “The Beach” and “28 Days Later” author Alex Garland, according to Sci- Fi exceptional works such as “Ex Machina”, “Annihilation” and “Devs” also provided very special moments with its dystopian war drama. It is all the more regrettable that he announced this year that he would be taking a break from directing until further notice and would concentrate fully on writing scripts again.
However, Garland has swung into the director's chair one (for now?) last time, albeit in the second row. In the war drama “Warthe 54-year-old told his friend Ray Mendoza Mostly left the stage and just gave him a little help and worked on the script with him. Mendoza is an ex-soldier who has primarily worked in the film business as a military and technical advisor, for example on the Mark Wahlberg actioners “Lone Survivor” and “Mile 22” as well as on Garland’s aforementioned “Civil War “.
Cast full of shooting stars
With “Warfare”, Ray Mendoza now makes his directorial debut, in which the former Navy SEAL processed his own experiences during the Iraq War – and revealed this through a particularly intensive mission, which, according to the trailer, is now retold in real time in the film. In fact, one of the film's main characters is even a fictionalized version of himself, played by “Reservation Dogs” star D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.
With Joseph Quinn (“Stranger Things”), Charles Melton (“Riverdale”), Kit Connor (“Heartstopper”) and Noah Centineo (“To All The Boys”), four stars from major Netflix hits also make up the majority of the cast young main actor -Gießen. Also there: “Shogun” lead actor Cosmo Jarvis, “Guardians Of The Galaxy 3” villain Will Poulter and James Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini (“The Many Saints Of Newark”).
“Warfare” opened in US cinemas in 2025, there is no German date yet. It's completely different with Alex Garland's next screenplay work, the late zombie sequel “28 Years Later”, which will be released in local cinemas on June 19, 2025. You can watch the recently released first trailer here:
