At least three people were killed and six others injured in a shooting at a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, according to police.
The suspected shooter, an underage student at the school, was found dead at the scene, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said during a news conference. At least six other people were taken to area hospitals with minor to life-threatening injuries, Barnes said. He did not say whether those killed or injured were students or faculty members.
Police had previously falsely reported that five people, including the shooter, were killed and five others were injured. Shortly after the first press conference, police updated the number of deaths and injuries: “Three have died. A total of nine were injured, including the three deceased.”
Police did not fire their weapons when responding to the shooting, Barnes said.
Abundant Life Christian School is a private K-12 school located approximately five miles east of the Wisconsin State Capitol. Police have asked people to avoid the area. There are currently no threats to other schools in the area, Barnes said.
“To be honest, I'm a little upset,” the police chief told reporters when asked how he felt. “So close to Christmas.” Every child, every person in this building is a victim and will forever be a victim. Such traumas don't just disappear. … My heart is heavy for my community. My heart is heavy for Madison.”
Barnes said he doesn't know of any metal detectors at the school. He pointed out that because the school is private, it does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Madison Metropolitan School District.
“My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to all the victims of the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School,” Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., wrote to X. “I will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
