A shooting Monday morning at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, killed five people, including the young gunman, police said.
The shooting broke out shortly before 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 Christian school, where police found several victims with gunshot wounds, according to police.
The police assume that the shooter – a teenager – attended the school.
“Today is a sad, sad day,” said Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, noting that officers had found the juvenile they believe was responsible for the shooting, adding that there was no active one There is no longer a threat.
The police did not fire their weapons at the shooter.
In addition to those killed, there were others injured whose injuries ranged from serious to minor. It was not immediately clear how many were injured or whether they were children or adults.
The age of those killed was also not known.
“Every person in this building is a victim and will forever be a victim. Trauma like that doesn’t go away,” Barnes said. “Right now my heart is heavy for my community. My heart is heavy for Madison.”
The shooting occurred just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting last Saturday. It also follows the March 2023 shooting at a Christian school in the Nashville area, in which gunman Audrey Hale killed six people at the school she once attended.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement: “We are praying for the children, educators and entire Abundant Life school community as we wait for more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond .”
Abundant Life Christian School confirmed the shooting in a social media post on Monday, writing on Facebook: “Prayers requested!” There was an active shooter incident at ALCS today. We are in the middle of tracking. We will share information as widely as possible.
“Please pray for our Challenger family.”
Roads around the school are currently closed while Madison Police investigate.
Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene to assist local law enforcement.
Police said their investigation was ongoing.
