  • Seniors who regularly attend church or synagogue may know the secret to longevity. In a report linking good health to religion, researchers at Duke University say seniors who attend religious services are healthier and more likely to live longer than nonreligious people.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • Charles A. Lindbergh, 72, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic non-stop, died of cancer at his seaside home in Kipahulu, Hawaii. Lindbergh was buried in the cemetery next to Kipahulu's small church.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • The fourth annual Soldiers Field Invitational 27-hole golf tournament is taking place this weekend in Rochester, with vendors donating all prizes.
  • “I want to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee,” Joe DiMaggio said to a sold-out crowd on “Joe DiMaggio Day.” (The Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-4 that day.)
  • A hurricane has caused enormous damage in Florida. The costs are estimated at over three million dollars and over 500 people have been left homeless.

1924 – 100 years ago

  • In perfect weather, a record number of people passed through the turnstiles of the Winona County Fair in St. Charles.
  • The Byron band will give its last summer concert of the season this week. School will open in Byron on Monday, September 1, 1924.
  • The first call for football candidates to report for training came from former Minnesota Gophers star Fred Oster, now coach of the Rochester High School football team.
