Los Angeles – Filmmaker James Gunn (58, “Suicide Squad”) artfully dials in his Superman film and looks nostalgically back at an iconic new actor. The director released a poster showing the Man of Steel floating in the iconic blue and red costume. The short video is accompanied by sounds from the soundtrack of the original 1978 film, in which Christopher Reeve played the tough superhero. The famous music by Oscar winner John Williams is clearly recognizable, but now slowed down and sounding softer.
Directed by Richard Donner in 1978, Reeve became probably the most famous Superman actor, transforming from shy reporter Clark Kent into the superhero. The actor was paralyzed in a riding accident in 1995 and died in 2004 at the age of 52.
A new “Man of Steel”
Gunn has announced his “Superman” film for a theatrical release in July 2025, with the first trailer due out this Thursday. He relies on a completely new “Man of Steel”: David Corenswet (31) wears the blue and red costume for the first time.
The US actor, who starred in TV series such as “The Politician” and “Hollywood”, succeeds Briton Henry Cavill, who played the DC hero in “Man of Steel” (2013), “Batman v Superman: “Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017). Rachel Brosnahan becomes Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult appears as his adversary Lex Luthor.
The new film will focus on the origins of the superhero, whose parents send him to Earth from the planet Krypton. There he is found by a childless couple in the US state of Kansas and grows up as Clark Kent.
