Verne unveils plans for a next-generation sustainable data center campus in Finland

LONDON

Verne, the leading provider of sustainably managed HPC data centers in the Nordics, today announced the acquisition of a strategic site in Mäntsälä, Finland and unveiled plans to build its fifth Nordic data center, further strengthening the company's position as a leading provider and scalable data center solutions are strengthened.

With an initial capacity of 70 MW, the 10-hectare campus in Mäntsälä, 40 minutes from Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, will support data-intensive companies and AI innovators running high-performance computing (HPC), machine learning and other high-intensity workloads, While it runs exclusively on renewable energy.

Designed for sustainability

The new facility will be built using Verne's proven design principles and expertise, which aim to maximize efficiency while helping customers reduce the environmental impact of their data center operations. In addition, the new campus will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources, while waste heat generated by the data center will be used for local heating projects.

“Verne’s data center campus in Mäntsälä is a significant step in our mission to help global companies leverage advanced computing technology while reducing their impact on the environment,” said Dominic Ward, CEO of Verne. “This new location is part of our strategy of continued growth in the Nordic region and marks our first location following Ardian’s acquisition of Verne.”

“Finland, with its abundance of clean energy, established data center industries and highly skilled workforce, provides the perfect environment for our latest development,” Ward continued. “We are also working closely with the Mäntsälä municipality to ensure that our newest facility benefits the region. “This includes a plan to use waste heat from the facility to provide hot water and heating to neighboring districts.”

“We are very pleased that Verne has chosen Mäntsälä as the location for its new data center. “This investment creates excellent opportunities for the broader development of the entire region,” said Mäntsälä Mayor Hannu Laurila. “Mäntsälä is seen as an extremely attractive location by companies – one reason for this is of course the location, but our basic infrastructure with reliable electricity networks is also very good.”

Construction of Verne's data center in Mäntsälä will begin in mid-2025 and is expected to take two years. This expansion represents a strategic step in the company's long-term plan to expand its sustainably operated data center platform, which was acquired by the world's leading private investment house Ardian in early 2024. Ardian is a long-term infrastructure investor committed to the Nordic market, where it has already invested more than 1.6 billion euros, with a focus on energy transition and digital infrastructure projects. The company is working with Verne to drive sustainable growth in the Nordics, starting with this expansion plan in Finland.

Verne's data center platform currently includes three additional facilities in Finland – in Helsinki, Pori and Tampere, along with a large campus in Iceland and a facility in central London optimized to support latency-sensitive applications. The expansion in Mäntsälä is another milestone in Verne's mission to provide sustainable data center solutions for the increasing demands of AI and HPC workloads.
