VfB Stuttgart has extended Jamie Leweling's contract, which was previously tied until 2028 but with an exit clause.
Update from December 17th, 9:30 a.m.: VfB Stuttgart announced Jamie Leweling's contract extension until 2029 on Tuesday morning. “Jamie embodied a lot of what people here associate with the upward development at VfB Stuttgart.” Jamie has become a difference player at VfB. “We are pleased about Jamie's clear commitment and that we were able to retain enormous sporting quality in Stuttgart in the long term with this early contract extension,” said sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth in the VfB statement.
Jamie Leweling said himself: “I know exactly what I get from VfB and am therefore very happy about the contract extension.” The coach, those responsible and everyone in the club and the surrounding area trust me and have given me extreme support in my development. I would like to get back on the pitch soon and pick up where I left off before the injury.”
Unsurprisingly, VfB's report does not contain any details about the exit clause.
First report from December 17th: Stuttgart – VfB Stuttgart is on the road to success in the end of the year. The Swabians got ten points from the last four games in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League the knockout phase is possible after a 5-1 win against BSC Young Boys, and in the DFB Cup they have already reached the quarter-finals.
VfB celebrated these successes without a shooting star of the last few months: Jamie Leweling has been missing since the beginning of November with a muscle injury that he sustained early in the game in the 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. The winger will probably only be able to play again after the winter break. And then you'll probably already have a new contract in your pocket.
New national player Jamie Leweling should become a top earner at VfB
As the trade magazine kicker and the TV broadcaster Sky unanimously report, the talks between Stuttgart and Leweling about an early extension have progressed to such an extent that there is talk of a “formality”. The new national player, who scored the winning goal against the Netherlands on his DFB debut in October, is apparently in line for a hefty salary increase.
After his signature, Leweling will probably become one of VfB's top earners. The club is taking into account the strong development of the 23-year-old, who initially came on loan from Union Berlin in 2023 and has since been signed permanently. With his flexibility and athleticism, Leweling has developed from a backup to a top performer. In Stuttgart they are sure that he can get back into good form after returning from injury.
Leweling waived his offensive clause at VfB Stuttgart
What is worth noting about the upcoming contract extension is that the professional is already bound until 2028. However, there is a risk of a promotion clause in Leweling's current contract, the amount of which was estimated in the media in October to be between 20 and 25 million euros.
In the summer, VfB had already lost Waldemar Anton, Serhou Guirassy and Hiroki Ito by clause, and media reports linked Enzo Millot, among others, to this for 2025 – and Leweling. In return for the long-term contract and the increase in his salary account, he will now waive an exit clause, writes kicker.
According to Sky, the clause “will no longer exist in this form”, so there would be a certain amount of room for interpretation.
