The iPhone app “feeeed”, a strong recommendation for the private and local creation of individual news feeds, has received a comprehensive update to version 12. In addition to Reading List improvements and bug fixes, the update also brings support for new platforms and expands the features offered.
iPhone app for individual news feed
With the new version, users can subscribe to Bluesky accounts for the first time. The integration expands the app's existing offering, which has already supported feeds from sources such as YouTube, Reddit, Mastodon and Threads. With the introduction of ActivityPub support, Threads and Mastodon URLs can now be inserted directly into the search box and subscribed to.
The developers say they have also fixed technical issues that have been occurring recently with notifications and Google News feeds. Although the presentation of Google sources is no longer as consistent due to service changes, the content is accessible again.
Another new function concerns photo memories: Users can now share so-called “photo flashbacks” directly, which expands the possibility of integrating personal flashbacks into their own feed experience. Additionally, the update improves the handling of feeds that contain incorrect or inaccurate dates.
Your content, your selection
“feeeed” positions itself as an alternative to algorithmically controlled timelines. The app works locally on the iPhone or iPad and completely dispenses with advertising, user accounts or external data transfer. The feed displayed is compiled and curated by you. Content such as RSS feeds, social media, newsletters, local photos and even personal data such as pedometer information can be integrated without having to contact an online service.
The focus on data protection and the avoidance of subscription models or in-app purchases remain even after the update. A Mac version of the app remains in beta testing, while the current version has been optimized for iOS 18.
