Stralsund. The fact remains that the Helios Group is very reserved and not very specific about the possible effects of the hospital reform on the Hanseatic Hospital in Stralsund in response to the most recent OZ request.

“We are of the opinion that the reform offers more advantages for Helios.” As a quality leader in Germany, we have the right structures for this. It is still too early to make a final assessment of the resulting developments and effects, but we are well positioned with our broad range of medical services.” But that does not mean that the doctors have been idle. Because the Stralsund answer is specialization.
At the Hanseatic Hospital in Stralsund, around 3,000 patients with breast cancer have been treated over the last 20 years.

Clinic manager: “We have used the last two years”
“We have used the last two years to further expand our skills.” Let’s take cardiology as an example. The range of services in this area has expanded enormously. “We will be inaugurating a second cardiac catheter laboratory in March 2025,” says Professor Matthias Birth, Medical Director of the Stralsund Clinic.

“Because of the great demand, which there was before, but many patients had to travel elsewhere, we are even considering keeping the container as a third treatment option,” he adds. “We have no reason to hide.” We are well positioned both in terms of breadth and quality.”
Center for tumor diseases of the abdominal cavity on track
Further plans for 2025 fit in seamlessly. “We want to become a visceral oncology center for tumor diseases of the abdominal cavity.” “We have already completed the preliminary audit and are confident that we will receive the certificate and thus recognition as a colon cancer and pancreatic cancer center this year,” says Matthias Birth in conversation with OZ. “With the new chief physician Dr. German Horn, an experienced gastroenterologist came to our house in the spring. Together with his team, he has managed to expand the spectrum in this short time. I’m just thinking about the endoscopic treatment methods.”
The heart of this is the Da Vinci surgical robot, which all surgeons have been incorporating more and more into their work for the past two and a half years. “We are developing step by step and have great results, for example in lung surgery. “But urologists and especially gynecologists also resort to the use of robots,” says Birth, who is also the head of surgery.

Breast cancer center has received certificate again
In the field of gynecology, Stralsund once received its first recognition as a cancer center – namely for the treatment of breast cancer. “The Stralsund Breast Center has stood for high quality treatment for 20 years now. “It is one of the most experienced centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,” says clinic managing director Franzel Simon.
Since the so-called Mamma Center was founded, the team has treated over 3,000 patients with breast cancer. “The good cooperation with the colleagues in private practice and the satisfaction of the patients demonstrate the quality of the work carried out.” “The auditors continually confirmed that the center has a high level of expertise,” the clinic boss continues.
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and it is a matter close to our hearts to offer those affected the best possible support and treatment,” says head gynecologist Constanze Robinson. “The diagnosis of breast cancer is a difficult decision for every woman. We attach great importance to providing our patients with optimal support in all phases of therapy – from diagnosis to aftercare. Our goal is not only to support women medically, but also emotionally.”

Stralsund offers a lot from a maximum provider
It seems clear that the Hanseklinikum, with a total of 1,000 beds as the largest hospital in Western Pomerania-Rügen, will continue to provide medical care to many patients in the future. With obstetrics, breast center, stroke unit, trauma center or cardiac arrest center and newly organized emergency room, Helios has many offers from a maximum care provider. Despite all the “We are well positioned”, the question still remains as to which toad the Hanseatic Hospital will have to swallow when implementing the hospital reform that has just been decided. The country will now decide on this.
