Residents of downtown Columbia have safety concerns after gun violence over the weekend

A man was recovering from non-life-threatening injuries Monday after police responded to a shooting call in downtown Columbia early Sunday morning.

Investigators had no information about the suspect.

Officers found several shell casings after hearing gunshots near the intersection of Tenth Street and Broadway shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators said before officers arrived at the scene, a man with non-life-threatening injuries was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.

Senior Caitlyn Jardenbeck of Mizzou lives in an apartment in the area.

Jardenbeck saw officers responding to the call about the shooting on Sunday morning.

“I didn't hear the shots,” Jardenbeck said. “I actually saw police cars speeding down the street right past me. There were a lot of police on the street and I had no idea what was going on.”

Jardenbeck said it was not uncommon for police to respond to violent crimes in downtown Columbia on weekends.

“It was definitely pretty scary. Especially because I walked past right afterward.”

Mizzou senior Sydney Zellak moved into an apartment near downtown in the first week of August.

Zellak said she didn't think about crime issues when she signed her lease.

“I think shootings are pretty normal these days,” Zellak said. “It's kind of scary. I would say I'm a little bit worried about my safety. Not living in the heart of downtown, I would say it makes me feel a little bit safer.”

Investigators did not disclose whether the injured man was hit by a bullet or injured in some other way.

Police asked anyone with information to call Columbia CrimeStoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.
