Android 16 enables better photos in third-party apps

Google plans to introduce a night mode indicator API in Android 16. This will allow apps to take photos in the dark with the quality that the standard new camera app would offer. The new API is intended to detect when a device is in a dimly lit environment and can activate night mode if necessary. Means: brighter, less crisp photos in Snapchat, Instagram and Co.

Individual apps and devices such as Instagram on a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (test) already support night photos. This can be recognized by the moon symbol that appears in dark environments. The API in Android 16 is intended to make this function accessible to other applications and smartphones.

According to a developer post on the Google Blog, Instagram currently only shows the moon button on Google Pixel 6 phones and newer as well as on the S24 Ultra and a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (test) and Galaxy Z Flip 6 (test).
