Federal Government: Cabinet clears the way for direct payments from the federal government to citizens

The cabinet has approved the key points for a payment mechanism for direct transfers. This was announced by the Federal Ministry of Finance. In the future, citizens will be able to receive relief through direct payments from the federal government.

The technical solution is expected to be created this year. “Our goal is for the basic mechanism with which lump-sum payouts are possible to be available this year,” said Finance Minister Jörg Kukies (SPD).

However, this only creates the technical option: “The future federal government must decide on specific services,” added Kukies. Until now, there was no way to directly and specifically pay out financial aid to citizens.

In crisis situations such as the corona pandemic or the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, this ensured that state aid was delayed. Climate money planned by the traffic light government also failed because there was no option for payment to compensate for the CO2 price.

At the beginning, the mechanism should only enable payments, later it should also be possible to differentiate based on income. The legal requirements for this purpose have already been created. The responsible Federal Central Tax Office is now allowed to save account details and link them to the tax identification numbers.

Some of the data comes from the family fund, but it can also be transmitted yourself via the Elster portal or the house bank.
