A 21-year-old man is recovering after being shot near New Castle on Tuesday afternoon – an incident that led to a car crash that required help from a school bus driver and a local church.
Just before 3:45 p.m., New Castle County police were alerted to the shooting, which occurred on Old Forge Road near Evlon Court. When the emergency dispatcher spoke with the caller, they learned that the young man had been taken from the scene on a school bus to a nearby church.
Officers found the man there and administered first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. He is currently listed as “stable,” police said.
As officers began investigating, they learned that the 21-year-old and an 18-year-old man were traveling on Old Forge Road when a suspect fired shots at their vehicle. At least one bullet hit the 21-year-old.

This caused the men to crash the car into a roadside fence, police said. They got out and the 21-year-old flagged down a passing school bus.
The bus, which was carrying children at the time, drove the man to the nearby church. The 18-year-old was uninjured, but his clothing was “damaged by gunfire,” police said.
None of the shots reached the school bus and parents were quickly alerted to the incident, police said.
