Update in the evening: ankle bracelet for the ex, no new one in Saxony

Good evening,

The election of the Prime Minister in Saxony was eagerly awaited – because the outcome and the re-election of Michael Kretschmer (CDU) was anything but clear until the end. Kretschmer's government coalition, consisting of the CDU and SPD, does not have a majority in the state parliament; it is ten votes short. The incumbent failed in the first round – he received 55 of the 61 votes needed for an absolute majority.

In the second round it worked: although only a simple majority was needed for victory, Kretschmer received the approval of 69 MPs. The AfD's strategy, on the other hand, is not working: In the second round of voting, the majority no longer supports its own candidate, but rather the more promising candidate from the Free Voters in order to help him win. The party used a trick in Thuringia in 2020: At that time, FDP man Thomas Kemmerich surprisingly won the election and triggered a similar political crisis.

Sarkozy has to wear ankle bracelets

That doesn't happen every day: an ex-president with an electronic ankle bracelet. Nicolas Sarkozy has to wear this for a year. The background is a bribery affair. The former French head of state was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 for illicit influence peddling – two of which were suspended. Now comes the final part of the punishment. In its verdict three years ago, the court found it proven that Sarkozy tried to bribe a lawyer in order to get information about proceedings against him.

Incidentally, he is the second former French president to be convicted of corruption: Jacques Chirac had to stand trial in 2011 for embezzlement of public funds and illegal party financing. And Sarkozy's list of problems with the judiciary is also long. More about this in the article:
