Frankenthal (dpa/lrs) – After attacks on correctional officers in various prisons, an inmate was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison for, among other things, murder. The Frankenthal Regional Court also found the man guilty of, among other things, two counts of bodily harm and, taking into account an earlier sentence, imposed a further total prison sentence of four and a half years. After the sentence has been served, preventive detention is planned, said a justice spokesman. The verdict is not yet final.
The man is said to have treacherously stabbed an officer in the neck in the Frankenthal prison with a shard of a dinner plate. The Syrian is also accused, among other things, of headbutting a correctional officer in Wittlich Prison. He is also said to have kicked an officer in the left hip while jumping. During his time in the Schwalmstadt prison in northern Hesse, the defendant is said to have kicked the protective shield carried by an officer in such a way that he suffered a fracture of the metacarpal bone of the little finger.
The trial in Frankenthal was conducted under high security precautions. Among other things, the defendant was shackled and handcuffed during the trial and was guarded by several judicial officers.
