Göttingen (dpa) – A presumably mentally ill man was fatally injured by a shot from an officer's service weapon during a police operation in Göttingen in the evening. The 35-year-old is said to have attacked and pushed a woman for no reason in the Geismar district shortly before the police arrived, according to police reports.
According to the investigation, the perpetrator and victim did not know each other. The woman believed she was in her apartment and called the police. When the first patrol car arrived, the man suddenly attacked the police officers with a knife. He injured one of them in the upper body.
The police officer then fired his service weapon and fatally injured the attacker. In the evening, forensics were still being carried out at the crime scene.
As the Göttingen police announced, for reasons of neutrality, all further investigations would now be handed over to another police station. What will happen is still unclear.
